Tomba / Tombi (WIP)

This is a little work in progress fan art depicting Tomba / Tombi from the series of the same name.  

A few days ago, I remembered this character when I was looking through some old boxes. Back in 2000, I had a kids magazine that would also give you cards with cheat codes for newly released games. I remembered, that one of them had Tomba and a Koma Pig from the first Tomba game on it.

So I decided to check out a let's play of the first Tomba game, as back in the day, I never got to play it by myself and but now I got curious and wanted to know about Tomba and the funny pig I saw on that cover nonetheless.

With little knowledge about the series besides the name of its main character, I jumped right in and watched most of the let's play by Newfie Bangaa.

Right now the only episode left for me to watch is episode 15, so I am close to the end of the let's play, but from what I can say so far, the series immediately hooked me with its memorable characters (like Tomba himself, his dog "Baron", his monkey friend "Charles", the dwarfs or the old men for example), so it made me very sad when I read that the developer Whoopee Camp only made two Tomba games before leaving the gaming business forever.

It always makes me sad to come across or remember a good series only to get to know, that the creators stopped working on it long ago without me noticing.  


Nonetheless, this is my second drawing of Tomba. This time, I am making a digital drawing of him, because my initial practice drawing with an ink pen turned out quite bad as I shaded him way too much. (I started scribbling Tomba while watching Newfie Bangaa's let's play  )

So far, I put 30 minutes into this digital fan art and came up with Tomba's face, his hair, his ears and his upper body down to his shoulders, making this drawing of him essentially a colored bust right now.

I am going to continue working on him later on, but for now I have some other, Kishin Douji Zenki related drawings to work on, that will soon be presented alongside my finished digital drawing of Tomba.
